BRAZIL-PARAGUAY: Lula pursues "imperialist" agenda in Asunción

Brazil's President, Lula da Silva, made an official two-day visit to Paraguay this week for the first time since 2003. The visit was designed to mollify Paraguay which, like Uruguay, claims it is suffering from trade asymmetries within Mercosur. Lula offered a series of development agreements. The Paraguayan press, however, argued that the agreements failed to conceal Brazil's "imperialist attitude" and that the new promises were little more than "empty words".
